Science PD Resources

Since its release in 2012, 49 states have adopted standards based on A Framework for K–12 Science Education. This framework represented a major shift in vision for science education that requires system-wide changes to achieve (e.g., development of new curriculum materials, assessments, teacher professional learning programs). A critical aspect is helping educators understand and implement phenomenon-based, three-dimensional science instruction. The science professional development resources below are intended to help with this process.

Understanding the Science Practices

The ultimate goal of science is the development of evidence-based explanations for, and models of, the natural world. In school, students engage in the science practices in service of this goal. During this two-hour PD session, teachers engage in activities using data from the NSSME+ study to help them deepen their understanding of the science practices and consider how they should be incorporated into their science instruction.
