Very <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">recently, the U.S. faced the possibility of a Zika outbreak. The possibility of effects on unborn <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">children from Zika had the potential to generate questions and concerns among students just as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Ebola did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">This study suggests that the majority of K\u201312 science teachers would discuss a topic like Ebola <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">or Zika. It also suggests that sources of information tailored for teachers are lacking. In <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">describing their Ebola instruction, most teachers cited websites of health organizations as their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">main source of information. These findings argue for policies and funding that support the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">development of materials specifically for classroom use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">From initiating the conversation to driving the discussion in class, student interest provided the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">opportunity for teachers to address Ebola in their classroom. Teachers should leverage student <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">interest and use instruction to deepen students\u2019 understanding of core science concepts and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">practices. Given time constraints for addressing required content, instruction should integrate <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">students\u2019 learning about core science concepts while engaging them with the science practices. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Topics like Ebola and Zika offer opportunities for authentic exploration of key science ideas, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">with students asking questions, constructing arguments from evidence, and developing <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">explanations.<\/span><\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text
