Survey data show that almost half of elementary school teachers and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">over three-fourths of middle and high school science teachers addressed Ebola during the 2014\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">15 school year. The results indicate that student interest was the major factor in determining <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">whether or not teachers took up Ebola in their instruction. Age appropriateness was also an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">important factor, especially among elementary teachers, who tended to identify it as a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">discouraging factor. This finding may explain why only about half of elementary teachers taught <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">about Ebola. In contrast, middle and high school teachers saw age appropriateness as an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">encouraging factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Since the topic of viruses is commonly included in life science classes, it was not surprising to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">find that life science teachers were almost twice as likely as non-life science teachers to address <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Ebola as a part of the curriculum. In fact, over 87 percent of middle and high school life science <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">teachers covered the topic.<\/span><\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- .tb-column-inner -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- .module_column -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- .subrow_inner -->\n\t\t<\/div><!-- .themify_builder_sub_row -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_subrow themify_builder_sub_row tb_u0jq91 tf_w tf_clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"subrow_inner col_align_top tb_col_count_2 tf_box tf_w\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column sub_column col4-3 tb_elwz92 first\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tb-column-inner tf_box tf_w\">\n\t\t\t\t<!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_dqw092   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n    <p><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 20px;\">Although a high percentage of teachers reported that they would have addressed the topic <\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 20px;\">without the students asking, about 80 percent of those who taught about Ebola reported that their <\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 20px;\">students asked first. Students not only initiated the topic, but also drove the discussion. The <\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 20px;\">most commonly addressed topics by all teachers were not surprising\u2014defining Ebola and <\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 20px;\">explaining how the virus is transmitted, including how to prevent transmission. The most <\/span><span style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 20px;\">frequent instructional activity was question-and-answer, guided by students\u2019 questions.<\/span><\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text --><!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_8tu092   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n    <p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Teachers most frequently cited websites from health organizations as substantially useful sources <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">of information about Ebola (over 80 percent regardless of grade range). In order to get a better <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">sense of how well the teachers understood the Ebola virus, the survey asked teachers to answer a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">series of 20 true or false questions. On average, teachers answered three-fourths of the items <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">correctly. In contrast, the majority of teachers answered two questions incorrectly. About 60 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">percent of teachers incorrectly answered a question on whether a drug was available for treating <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">people infected with the Ebola virus. Interestingly, the other question related to a topic teachers <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">reported addressing the most in their classroom: how Ebola is transmitted and how to prevent the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">transmission. This question was answered incorrectly by more than two-thirds of teachers, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">regardless of grade range. The large overlap between the percentage of teachers who taught <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">about the transmission of Ebola and the percentage of teachers who missed those transmission <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">questions indicates that many teachers may have provided students with incorrect information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One of the largest differences between those who did and did not teach about Ebola was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">confidence in their knowledge of Ebola. Interestingly, teachers\u2019 confidence scores did not seem <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">to reflect their test scores. Specifically, teachers seemed less confident than their test scores <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">would suggest.
