{"id":1604,"date":"2018-01-02T11:53:06","date_gmt":"2018-01-02T16:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/?page_id=1604"},"modified":"2019-04-15T16:22:57","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T20:22:57","slug":"student-experience-2-what-are-decomposers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/getting-started-interdependence\/driving-question-pathway-the-mystery-at-sunrise-farm-pond\/the-mystery-at-sunrise-farm-pond-part-two\/student-experience-2-what-are-decomposers\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Experience 2: What are decomposers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/decomposers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1817 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/decomposers.png\" alt=\"decomposers\" width=\"125\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/getting-started-interdependence\/driving-question-pathway-the-mystery-at-sunrise-farm-pond\/the-mystery-at-sunrise-farm-pond-part-two\/student-experience-2-what-are-decomposers\/print\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Print\">Print<\/a>\n<h3><em>Purposes<\/em><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>To help students understand what decomposers need to survive.<\/li>\n<li>To help students understand that decomposers are consumers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><em>Description<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Ask students to look at their drawings from Part One and name the various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/organisms-vs-plants-and-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\">organisms<\/a> found in Sunrise Farm Pond.\u00a0 Ask them to name which of the organisms are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizon-research.com\/ASSET\/plants-vs-producers\/\" target=\"_blank\">producers<\/a> (algae and underwater plants).\u00a0 Once the producers have been determined, ask them what the other organisms in the pond are (perch, minnows, mayfly larvae).\u00a0 If they are not familiar with the term \u201cconsumer,\u201d ask students to describe what these organisms need to survive.\u00a0 They should realize that the things the organisms need to survive are the same things humans need (i.e., food, water, and air; particularly oxygen).\u00a0 Let the students know that these organisms are all in a group called consumers, and that, unlike producers, consumers are organisms that cannot make food within their own bodies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#087c19;border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#3baf4c;color:#FFFFFF;border-top-left-radius:1px;border-top-right-radius:1px\">Crosscutting Concepts<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:1px;border-bottom-right-radius:1px\">\n<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#b7cec0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#d1e8da;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ngss.nsta.org\/CrosscuttingConcepts.aspx?id=1\" target=\"_blank\"><b> Patterns <\/b><\/a> Applying what they learned about producers&#8217; needs in Part One of the pathway, students are able to classify organisms based on patterns of what they need to survive.\u00a0 Emphasizing these patterns (i.e., the commonalities and differences in needs of various organisms) can support students&#8217; ability to differentiate between producers and consumers. <\/div><\/div> <\/div><\/div>\n<p>Recall with students that in the first student experience, they saw videos with rotting fruit.\u00a0 Another way to describe what happened to the fruit is \u201cdecomposition.\u201d\u00a0 Ask students what they think caused the fruit and vegetables to decompose.\u00a0 They may mention the bugs or the mold that appeared on the fruit and vegetables in the time-lapse videos.\u00a0 Let students know that these are decomposers, and that decomposers are necessary for decomposition.\u00a0 Take a class poll about whether students think decomposers are producers or consumers, and call on volunteers to defend their answers.\u00a0 If they are unsure, ask students to think about what producers and consumers need to survive.\u00a0 Record these lists for all students to see.<\/p>\n<p>Next, let students know they will be conducting an experiment to explore whether decomposers are producers or consumers.\u00a0 Take five paper plates (one for each condition) and place a strawberry, piece of melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, etc.), and piece of bread on each.\u00a0 Tell students that they are going to place the plates of food in different conditions to test what helps or hinders decomposers.\u00a0 Ask students to make suggestions based on the lists that they created for the needs of producers and consumers.\u00a0 In the end, you will want to make sure that you have the following conditions: one plate in sunlight, one in dark, one where each item has been dunked in water.\u00a0 Students may make other suggestions, such as placing a plate in cold or heat or adding dirt.\u00a0 Once the five conditions have been decided upon, add the necessary items to the plates and place each in a gallon zip bag.\u00a0 Then place the bags in the agreed-upon locations.\u00a0 Have students record observations for each plate at regular intervals for one week.<strong>\u00a0 It is not necessary to pause instruction during this week; you can continue with the next student experiences as the experiment runs its course.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#000cb4;border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1a3fe7;color:#FFFFFF;border-top-left-radius:1px;border-top-right-radius:1px\">Science Practices<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:1px;border-bottom-right-radius:1px\"> <div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#a5c3e0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#bfddfa;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ngss.nsta.org\/Practices.aspx?id=3\" target=\"_blank\"><b> Planning and Carrying Out Investigations <\/b><\/a> Students work collaboratively to design a class investigation focused on decomposition.\u00a0 In setting up the investigation, students make suggestions for conditions to test and make predictions about what will happen under the various conditions. What about if they are consumers?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think the decomposers will react to the different conditions?\n<ul>\n<li>Which conditions do you predict will be most helpful for decomposer growth? Why?<\/li>\n<li>Which conditions do you predict will be least helpful? Why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>At the end of the week:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you see in the bags with the food?<\/li>\n<li>In which condition did the mold\/fungi first appear?<\/li>\n<li>Which condition was most helpful for decomposer growth? Which was the least?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think decomposers are producers or consumers? Why?\n<ul>\n<li>What do decomposers need to grow and survive?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>An important point to make during this student experience is that decomposers are consumers and thus have the same needs as consumers (e.g., food, water, oxygen). Have students think about how these needs factor into the experiment.\n<ul>\n<li>What is the food?<\/li>\n<li>Where is the water in the bag? How did the plate with the extra water do?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think might have happened if we removed the air from the bag? Why do you think that?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em>Student Thinking<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Some students believe that decomposition is a process that occurs in the absence of decomposers (i.e., that material decomposes on its own).<\/li>\n<li>Some students think mushrooms are plants (Barman, 2006), leading them to believe that decomposers are producers.<\/li>\n<li>Some students think decomposers, such as mold, are abiotic entities (i.e., not alive\/not a consumer) (Leach, 1992; Leach, 1996).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em>Implementation Tips<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Seal the bags using tape (such as duct tape or packing tape) to avoid unpleasant odors.<\/li>\n<li>Use fresh bread (i.e., bread without a lot of processed ingredients or preservatives) to see the decomposition within the time frame. (Bread with preservatives will take longer to mold.)\u00a0 Fresh bread is available in the bakery section of most grocery stores.<\/li>\n<li>Students may think there is no oxygen in the bag because it is sealed, but there is because there was air in the bag initially.<\/li>\n<li>Students should see that the mold grows in the dark and in the light, which indicates light is not necessary for its growth. This demonstrates that the mold is not photosynthesizing, and thus is not a producer.<\/li>\n<li>You should have several kinds of mold\/fungi by the end of the experiment. Make sure to point this out to students.\u00a0 There are many kinds of decomposers, including many kinds of fungi.<\/li>\n<li>Condensation will likely form inside the bag, which may make it difficult to see inside. It is okay to lift the plastic away from the food to get a better view, but do not open the bags or press down on the foods in the bags.<\/li>\n<li>Do not open the bags at the end of the week because of the possibility of breathing in the spores.
