Authors: Simpson, Mary Ann; Banilower, Eric R.
Date: December 2004

This report details the results of the final year of a three-year study aimed at examining the impact of the Local Systemic Change Initiative (LSC) on student achievement in science. The third year of the study examined student achievement at the elementary and middle grades during the 2003-04 academic year. Twelve LSC projects participated in the elementary grades study; six LSC projects participated in the middle grades study. Multilevel modeling was used to relate changes in student achievement to the extent of teacher participation in LSC professional development. In addition, the study examined the impact of the LSC on a number of achievement gaps including gender, race/ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
