Analyzing Student Work Training

ATLAST team members drew upon project experiences and outcomes to develop a training session focused on revealing student thinking through the analysis of student work.  The training session was implemented as a Professional Development Institute in conjunction with the 2009 annual conference of the National Science Teachers Association.

The training session provides strategies and resources for analyzing student work and guides practice in their use.  A discussion of the importance of analyzing student work is followed by a review of relevant elicitation strategies and analytical frameworks.  The session emphasizes guided practice with the analysis of student-constructed written work, multiple choice items, and utterances.

The analysis of student work presentation provides an outline and sequence of activities for the training session.  It also refers to samples of student work that were used to structure analysis practice.
