Mellisa C. Smith

Mellisa C. Smith, Research Associate, received a Bachelor's Degree in Statistics from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada and a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Prior to coming to HRI in 2004, Ms. Smith worked for the Southeast Eisenhower Regional Consortium for Mathematics and Science at SERVE. There she was the coordinator of the Middle School Mathematics Project-a collaborative initiative to improve mathematics achievement through research, school site analysis, and research-based professional development for middle schools in the southeast region. She has also taught mathematics at the middle and high school levels in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

Currently, she is assisting in a study of the impact of the Connected Mathematics materials relative to conventional mathematics programs on student achievement. In addition, she assists with the teacher and counselor questionnaire development for the "High School Longitudinal Study" that is funded by the US Department of Education. Ms. Smith is also a member of the evaluation team for the Mathematics Content Collaboration Communities, and the Developing Facilitators of Practice-based Materials for Mathematics Professional Development.
