Daniel J. Heck

Daniel J. Heck, Senior Research Associate at Horizon Research, Inc. (HRI), received a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and History and a Master's Degree in Education from Wake Forest University, and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a specialization in Educational Psychology, Quantitative and Evaluative Research Methodologies.
Prior to joining HRI in 1999, Dr. Heck taught mathematics at the high school level and was an Associate Researcher at the University of Wisconsin's Center for Education Research. At Horizon, Dr. Heck has directed the Study of the Impact of the Statewide Systemic Initiatives, Lessons Learned from Research on Systemic Reform projects, and the evaluations of Indiana University's Indiana Mathematics Initiative Partnership and the Center for Curriculum Materials in Science. He also provided leadership in mathematics education on the Inside the Classroom project, and on longitudinal and large-scale quantitative analyses for the Core Evaluation of the Local Systemic Change through Teacher Enhancement.
Dr. Heck is Co-PI of the Fostering Mathematics Success for English Language Learners research project. He currently leads HRI’s evaluations of the Learning and Teaching Geometry, Cases of Reasoning and Proving in Secondary Mathematics, Digital Environments for Learning and Teaching Algebra, and Geometry Assessments for Secondary Teachers projects. He is also a senior staff member on the Math and Science Partnership Knowledge Management and Dissemination and Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum projects.
